why does it matter if the definitions of bisexuality overlap with the definitions of pansexuality or polysexuality or other multisexual identities??

there are over 50 words that are synonyms for beautiful (or have similar but slightly different definitions/uses), but we don’t go around policing people for using words like stunning or gorgeous because “people might get confused and what you really mean is beautiful”

bi-privilege

“i’m sorry ma’am you cannot refer to yourself as beautiful when you are clearly gorgeous. stop erasing gorgeous ppl.”

When people talk about "nepotism babies" I feel like the conversation always gets centered around a really obvious and direct kind of privilege,

people tend to get really focused on the idea of the famous parent calling people on their child's behalf or just the last name opening doors and getting the child booked regardless of talent

and then the child of those people deny that ever happened for them, and round and round we go

but you know what, I don't actually think that happens as much as we think (though I definitely think it happens more than those kids want to admit)

I think the reality is much subtler than that, and is the bigger leg up:

if you grow up with famous parents, you get to witness what being successful in the industry looks like first hand, and you already have a guidepost for navigating that in ways it takes non-famous kids years or even decades into the industry to learn

in the same way that if you grow up with parents with white collar jobs, you have a massive leg up in understanding office norms and behavior over kids who don't have that experience

we all learn so much about the world through our families, and when your family is deeply involved in an industry you get so much foundational knowledge that someone starting the industry at 20 still has to learn

Imagine you want to be an actor, and your mom is an actor already. Here are examples of things I imagine you could pick up, merely by being her child: her process, how she hones her craft, acting techniques she likes and doesn't like, running lines with her, seeing her audition, how she negotiates, what an agent does and how your mom deals with hers, different positions/jobs on set or elsewhere in the industry, comfort with being on a set, knowledge about appropriate set behavior, what publicity tours require from her, her ups and her downs and what she does when parts aren't turning up for her, etc etc. Not even getting into just the straight up wealth privilege that comes with that level of success, nor to mention that if your mom is a wealthy actress you're much more likely to be attending a school with an actual functioning arts program...

Imagine how much more time you'd have to devote to your craft when you already are familiar and comfortable with the industry, when you have financial security, when your family "gets" and supports the idea of making a living through the arts, when you already know what an agent is and how to find one and what kind of deal with one is fair vs. predatory, and more. People sometimes will talk about nepotism babies being actually good like they're shocked but to me I'm like, "Well duh, I think if you took most kids and gave them that kind of comfort, safety, and support + their own drive to succeed, yeah you get a lot of kids who have the time and space and expertise to become good at their art, yes"

anyways, I just think if we want to actually talk about nepotism it's hurting us to keep it at the "well did your mom buy you that audition?" level because that's the easiest thing to deny and brush off. and we gotta stop being surprised when nepotism babies are good, because if that's surprising us we're missing seeing clearly exactly what's been handed to them.

So, Boris Johnson wrote an essay in which he talked about the Sistine Chapel and then said : “There is nothing like it in Muslim art of that or any age, not just because it is beyond the technical accomplishment of Islamic art, but because it is so theologically offensive to Islam.”

NOT TO MENTION the fact that the prohibition against direct images in Islam was actually the reason for the development of the incredible advances in higher mathematics of the Islamic Golden Age because they were required to create these structures. The Islamic World basically took the ban on images as a “hold my beer” thing and created an entire artistic culture based on mathematics and architecture where art and science fed into and glorified each other, 700 years before the Italian Renaissance.

In conclusion

outercorner

i will say that islamic art drove me nuts as a kid because i did not have the math knowledge or capability to create such geometric patterns. it may have been the art of my people but by gOD it was difficult and unnecessarily difficult. however my pride in islamic art is neverending. it was frowned upon to be vain in the house, so artists would deck out the places of worship - but places of worship couldn’t be too garishly decorated, or it might detract from worship! the compromise? calm blues and greens, intricate details hidden into the complex patterns. carefully mapped out and planned patterns that were beyond complex and straight into deliberately confusing and practically impossible to replicate. not only that, but verses from the Quran were hidden along the walls, asking god for blessings and care.

muslim art is stunning and i’ll fight the bitch that says otherwise.

amuseoffyre

Also something underappreciated about the Islamic art is that not only is it geometrically incredible, but the geometry and structure of it has a purpose. In the niches and ceilings, the cascading ornamentation is used for acoustic purposes. In many of the mosques, they are so well laid out and designed that a single person standing on a specific spot can speak/sing/pray and be heard in every single part of the building.

prismatic-bell

I feel like this should be considered under the same heading as “fascists don’t like abstract art.”

Like, that’s a whole thing. If you look at the art favored by dictators and fascists, it’s almost entirely portraits and landscapes. (Nice, serene, pastoral landscapes, though. None of that war-torn realism stuff.) Rarely still-lifes, unless there’s also a person in the picture. It’s literally common enough to be considered a phenomenon. And while Islamic art isn’t abstract in the sense we usually use the word, it certainly does not include portraits or serene pastoral landscapes.

Just, you know. Considering who said this. Something to consider.

Our system is broken.  It is cruel.  It is dehumanizing, degrading, and it’s vile nature is so, so unnecessary.

We need universal healthcare today in America.  We needed it 40 years ago.  It’s cheaper, it’s simpler, it’s more efficient, it’s more effective and it is so, so, so much less cruel than what we have.

image

Additional sources/references:

Universal Healthcare Cost in America would be cheaper by trillions of dollars

The US has worse life expectancies than socialized healthcare countries

We have worse generalized healthcare results

We have the most expensive care

Our system is so cruel and unique that doctors from other countries literally can’t believe what happens here

I can’t tell you where or how to activate to help solve this.  There are politicians, groups, and activists pushing for this in so many ways.  I can tell you when, though.

Now.

If you are making a boy character into a girl character for a gender swap art thing you better put that bulk back on that girl or so help me. You think girls are allergic to muscles? To fat? Do you think big bulky butch women are imaginary or something?? If that boy is as wide as a fridge that girl better be a deep freezer. Cowardice. Rights for women that are built like a tank!

Rebloging this to add a little more info because it’s very important:

Antiretroviral therapy when used correctly can cause the user’s “viral load” (your viral load is how much of the virus is in your bloodstream), to drop because the medicine prevents HIV from creating copies of itself.

Regular blood tests are done to monitor your viral load, and after taking the medication long enough, it can drop so low that it becomes “durably undetectable”. This means that the HIV virus in you has become so miniscule that it can’t be detected, and by extension can’t be transmitted either. It’s important to note that in order to be considered durable undetectable, you MUST test as undetectable for at least 6 months after testing as undetectable for the first time.

Also very important, being durably undetectable does NOT mean that you’re cured or that the virus is gone, not by a longshot. The HIV virus is still very much there, but instead of being active, it’s gone dormant in a small number of cells called “viral reservoirs”. This why it’s EXTREMELY important that even after achieving durably undetectable status, you continue to take your Antiretroviral medications correctly. Because if you stop, the HIV virus will reemerge from the viral reservoirs and pick up right where it left off in creating copies of itself, and you will have to start all over again if you want to become durably undetectable again.

This is great advice for people struggling with or know someone who has HIV.

thinking you somehow deserve a “more interesting” pet than a cat or dog is just another expression of the “not like other girls” main character syndrome gene.

is-the-owl-video-cute

since this is spreading more than expected, I should clarify this post was about people trying to get pet foxes or owls, not ferrets or geckos.

tdwhisperer

I agree with you but foxes are a bad example as domesticated foxes do exist. They're called Domesticated Silver Foxes, and they originate from an experiment in Russia. That is not to say it's easy or cheap to take care of them. Even just importing them can cost 9000$

The issue isn't what animal you get, it's getting an animal that exceeds your ability to adequately care for it. For certain animals you would need the equivalent of a specialized zoo just to keep it happy and healthy.

is-the-owl-video-cute

As myself and @is-the-fox-video-cute have said on several occasions, these are not domesticated in the sense they are adapted to human companionship as pets. They were selectively bred larger and in different colors for fur farming. True domestication takes hundreds to thousands of years. The Russian fox pet project went on for a few decades with incredibly flawed data and parameters.

Silver foxes still have the exact same care requirements as the wild type red fox. If you illegally stole a red fox kit from the wild and hand raised it, the experience would be very similar to buying a silver fox. Foxes are not ethical pets under any circumstances.

tdwhisperer

You've clearly thought about this a lot, and despite my own research I can't understand your viewpoint, so let me ask you this: What seperates an "ethical" pet from an "unethical" pet, in your opinion?

is-the-owl-video-cute

An ethical pet is a domesticated animal that can have all of its needs met in a fulfilling manner inside the human home, an aviary, or a pasture. An unethical pet is any wild animal that does not meet the aforementioned criteria and/or any animal that has a negative impact on their quality of life as a result of being in a standard pet environment. A pet is also not ethical if keeping it in a pet environment places the animal and/or humans at serious health risk.

Foxes are wild animals, largely solitary in their natural lives, though they may tolerate other foxes when food is abundant, they are territorial and can be distressed by other animals in what they claim as their territory, something accomplished by urine marking and occasionally by fighting the interloper.

Foxes also require a true carnivore diet, as in, they cannot eat kibble. It is very difficult to fulfill their dietary needs in captivity because having a consistent supply of whole carcasses for daily feeding is not feasible for private owners. Most end up just feeding foxes processed meats and berries supplemented with cat food. This is not a balanced diet for a fox and leads to health problems.

If you are in a country where rabies is a factor, it is pertinent to keep in mind that there is no vaccine approved for foxes to protect against this virus. On a practical standpoint a canine rabies vaccine should work, but I have seen wildlife kept as pets get taken to court and become forcibly seized/euthanized after biting someone because they cannot be certified as having been vaccinated against rabies. Note that while rabies is the most serious, it is not the only major zoonotic disease you can contract from a fox.

Even “exotic” vets do not generally know how to treat wildlife. If an animal cannot get competent veterinary care and management, keeping it as a pet is not ethical. There is a reason most zoos have their own private veterinarians on staff that specialize in wildlife. Exotic vets know parrots and lizards and small mammals. That is their field, they were not trained on foxes.

Foxes are highly active animals that require several miles roaming to maintain their good body condition and general health. Complacency is not good for foxes. Combine this with their primarily nocturnal sleep cycle and you run into a notable issue regarding an animal that is bored and frustrated in your home while you’re trying to sleep. This results in a lot of destruction of property and stress behaviors in the fox.

So you’re getting pretty far into this post, and probably wondering why I don’t support pet foxes despite all the aforementioned issues since a private owner could construct an enclosure which would be no different from what is done in zoos. However, this is quite frankly not feasibly something pet owners do. Consider the fact that any time a private owner has been caught with monkeys or tigers, the animal was always either loose in the house or caged. Generally incredibly obese from improper diet and lack of exercise and riddled with various physical and mental ailments. These are animals that can be kept in a zoo enclosure in good health and they can be trained to do a great number of things allowing vets to perform exams efficiently and safely, so why does this not happen with a pet keeper?

Consider this: AZA accredited zoos and aquariums have entire staff teams for each category of animal. These teams consist of keepers who pursued degrees in biological sciences and have extensive prior experience with such animals via prior internships. These are people who conference with keepers and researchers around the world to ensure that they are up to date on the physical and mental needs for each species to be successful and perform its natural behaviors. They have constant supplies of rabbit, chicken, quail, duck, rat, mouse, deer, etc. carcasses to feed their predators properly. They have the space to give their wildlife massive enclosures to run, jump, and hide from the public. The animals receive competent vet care and direct human/animal contact is kept to a minimum.

This level of care is not feasible in any private ownership. Theoretically, a billionaire could afford such a set up for a “look but don’t touch” wild animal such as a fox, but of all the billionaires that exist I have yet to find one that I could trust with a pet rock let alone a wild animal, and the average person whom I am referring to in these posts and interacting with will never be able to afford their own private zoo. At that point just go to the zoo anyway honestly. You are not entitled to wildlife.

fuckingtiredbitch

Since reading Owl vids reply is a huge thing and takes a decent bit of time, to sum it up: It is far too costly, time intensive, and space intensive to safely keep a fox in any way that does not violate its basic health and emotional needs. The only real way to care for a fox in anything close to a pet scenario is to be a zoo keeper, and even then it is not feasible for any one person to do alone for any extended period of time.

do you ever think really awful thoughts and suddenly become aware that you are not a good person

i could give you my rant on how being raised in a world dominated by orthodox (i.e. morality is based on thinking the right things rather than doing the right things) religions fucks with your head, but i’ll keep it short

- if you have a dark thought that you find actively distressing, how can that thought be reflective of your basic morality? intrusive thoughts are distressing precicely because they go against your moral core. everyone has them sometimes and some mental illnesses come with a lot more of them, and they suck but they don’t make you a bad person

- if you have a dark thought that you don’t find distressing, but you choose not to act on it because you know it would hurt yourself or others, how can that thought be reflective of your basic morality when you’re making the moral choice not to act on it? that choice is what defines you, not the thought

- if you have a dark thought that you choose to act on, but realise later that it hurt someone and you don’t want to be someone who hurts people, how can that thought be reflective of your basic morality? you know you fucked up and you’re trying to do better, and that’s what defines you; not the thought, and not your past

everyone has dark impulses sometimes, both concious and unconcious, if that’s our rubrick for what makes a good person we might as well throw out the entire human race. what defines a person is what they choose to do with those impulses, and, and this is the big one, whether they’re trying to be better today than they were yesterday.

Anonymous asked:

Team Avatar was very kind to Zuko with naming him Prince Angry Ponytail. Would the name have been the same if he showed up in the South Pole with only one (but gigantic at that) acne on his face?

muffinlance answered:

“Prince Target Practice,” Sokka snickers all through season one, because come on, big red spot to aim for with his boomerang? Priceless.

He says it to his face in season two.

“EXACTLY,” shouts Zuko in season three, “AND IF AANG DOESN’T TAKE HIS PRACTICE SERIOUSLY, THE FATHER LORD IS GOING TO DO THE SAME TO HIM.”

Sokka realizes they have been talking about different things, and also that his joke might have been a bit on-target.
